Student House Bill Split Calculator
Split your house's monthly bills equally or by room rent, and see what each housemate owes.
How it works#
Enter the whole house's bills for the month, then choose how to split them. Equally divides every bill by the number of people. In proportion to room rent makes the person with the biggest room pay the biggest share, which is how many houses with unequal rooms do it. Add everyone's rent to use it.
If one housemate has paid for something the whole house uses, such as cleaning supplies, bin bags or loo roll, put the amount under Shared spending they paid for on their row. It is added to the shared costs and split the same way as the bills, and the person who paid is credited. In the table, Misc is each person's share of that spending less what they paid, so a minus means they get money back.
The shares are worked out to the penny and always add up to the bills exactly, so nobody is left short by a rounding error. If a bill does not divide evenly, the odd pennies go to whoever's share has the largest remainder.
Before you rely on it#
Full-time student households are generally exempt from council tax, but the exemption goes if a part-time student or a non-student lives there. If your house does pay it, add it under Other shared bills.
Splitting bills between yourselves does not change what your landlord can claim. On a joint tenancy, each tenant can usually be chased for the whole amount, not just their share. Our guide to splitting bills in a student house explains that, and how to agree a method before the first bill arrives.
